- If you are going to need cash to pay for certain items, make sure there is either a local shop to exchange travellers cheques and make sure that you know what times this shop is open in case you need money in a hurry. Remember that many smaller resorts may not have an ATM machine and therefore you may need to travel further a field if you need to attain cash.
- It would be very worthwhile to take money away with you in a number of different formats including Cash, Travellers Cheques and Credit/Debit Card. It is even better to keep these different types of cash in different places when you are away so that if there is a problem you still have the ability to still pay your way. Obviously if at all possible cash and other important documents should be kept in a safe for security and your peace of mind.
- Never wander about with more cash than you need, you wouldn't do this at home when you are more aware of your surroundings so why would you consider this whilst in an unknown foreign land.
- Take a list of all emergency contact information for your credit/debit cards so that if they are lost or stolen you are able to easily cancel the cards and inform the companies of your issue. They may be able to arrange for a replacement card for your return home.
- It is well worth knowing that in developing countries especially that the American Dollar is the unit of currency that is the strongest and can be the easiest to exchange (whether that be cash or Travellers Cheques).
- When using your travellers cheques make sure that you keep your receipts and records of the cheques and which have been used so that you can inform the company if they are lost or stolen, keep these two documents separately so that you have two places to find out this information.
- Tipping is different wherever you go in the world, make sure that you know the local etiquette before going away to avoid embarrassment.
- By making sure that you have access to your bank account online, it can help whilst away to keep tabs on what activity is going on within your account and what your balance may be. When logging into such accounts at internet cafes or at your hotel, always remember to log out of your accounts before you leave to make sure that no-one else has access to your accounts.
