Potential plans to encourage more families in to urban properties could push up the demand for home insurance cover.
According to research conducted by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, many families resist moving to inner-city areas because there is a lack of suitable housing. For example, the study looked at two newly built London neighbourhoods and discovered that eight out of ten private homes had only one or two bedroom making them unsuitable for many families.
The Foundation wants to encourage urban developers to improve the range of properties on offer as well as investing in local services such as schools and health provision.
In particular, the new urban communities need to attract more mixed income families to ensure a long-term suitable neighbourhood for children and parents.
Ruth Lupton, co-author of the report, said: "Families do choose to live in mixed income developments if the design and management of these schemes is right. Central and local government need to consider these issues with developers if they want families to be part of the means of revitalising our inner cities."
