The rise in street crime is pushing up the demand for home insurance policies.
New figures from the Home Office suggest that many criminals are targeting those people who carry expensive gadgets such as Ipods and mobile phones in some areas of the UK street mugging rates have increased by 40 per cent over the past 12 months.
Research from home insurance provider More Th>n concluded that the average 16-24 year old today owns over £5,300 worth of such gadgets the majority being carried outside of the home.
The arrival of new technology and expensive portable goods means that many more consumers are looking for home insurance policies that also offer protection of personal items even when used away from their main property.
David Pitt, head of insurance at More Th>n, added: "As this research highlights, there is a proliferation of small but high value gadgets not only in the home now, but also on our person as we go about our daily life."
