The increasing number of rogue traders could undermine home insurance claims and push up premiums.
New research suggests that 38 per cent of Brits do not trust builders, plumbers or electricians and that botched jobs could be costing homeowners around £1.5 billion per year.
The government is hoping that a new trading standards scheme, TrustMark, will boost confidence in the industry and may mean that people are not forced to claim via their home insurance policies when things go wrong.
Office of Fair Trading chief executive John Fingleton said: "Consumers are entitled to a good standard of service - whether it is from a plumber, an electrician or a builder."
"We believe that the TrustMark scheme ensures that consumers can be confident of the service they receive, and that they will be dealing with a reputable firm and not falling victim a rogue trader," he added.
In order to become part of the new scheme traders must meet a number of standards, prove their financial trustworthiness and have a complaint process in place.
