Anyone planning a major expenditure is being urged to make sure they take out the appropriate travel insurance.
Four time Everest summiteer Luis Benitez, speaking to ExplorersWeb, admitted that many people spend time making sure they have packed enough clothing rather than researching the various travel insurance options because they fail to realise how much emergency treatment can cost.
"Most of us when we leave on an expedition are too busy checking if we have enough socks, hats, gloves, and all the other little things that we seem to forget about," said Mr Benitez.
He added: "One of the little things that most people overlook before going on a big trip is travel insurance. This of course is hugely different from your basic health insurance. Sure, you think, I have nothing to worry about because if I get hurt out there, I will just pay to get myself home and my insurance will pick up the rest."
It is estimated that helicopter rescue from a remote place can cost around $3,000 -with medical treatment this can quickly increase to over $10,000. In addition, the cost of lost baggage and expensive equipment can also start to mount up; however, the purchase of specialist travel insurance could cover such losses.
