Around one in eight people will book a holiday in order to avoid the forthcoming World Cup. However, they are being reminded that they will still need travel insurance for their getaway.
Research by American Express Travel Insurance research concluded that 12 per cent of its 10,000 travel insurance customers are planning to travel abroad as a way of avoiding the World Cup coverage.
It is estimated that around 56 per cent of the World Cup avoiders are female and are keen to escape the football hysteria that is set to sweep the country this June.
A further 28 per cent of customers admitted they were certainly not planning to take a trip during the month-long tournament and instead planned to watch as many matches as possible. However, if England is sent home early it could see demand for travel services increase dramatically.
Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express Insurance Services, said: "If England gets knocked out of the World Cup we are expecting a rush of last minute bookings."
