More than three million people have not taken travel insurance when holidaying abroad, claims a new survey.
Sainsbury's Bank research discovered that 3.33 million people have failed to take out a travel insurance policy over the past 12 months equal to 13 per cent of Brits holidaying overseas.
The youngest and oldest age brackets are the least likely to take appropriate travel insurance, with 16-to-24 year-olds accounting for 24 per cent of uninsured travellers and the over-65s making responsible for 14 per cent.
Karen Preston, travel insurance manager at Sainsbury's Bank stress that travel insurance should rank alongside buying new holiday clothes and checking travel plans.
"Travel insurance is essential for anyone going abroad, even if they are just planning a long weekend," she said.
"Last year, we estimated that there could have been around 241,000 travel insurance claims for medical or hospital care alone."
