Anyone planning a cruise this winter is being reminded to take out holiday insurance before their climb abroad.
Cruising is quickly becoming a popular alternative to a winter skiing holiday as people fancy the idea of getting away from it all. However, American Express Travel Insurance is encouraging people to double check their current holiday insurance cover to make sure it meets all their cruising holiday needs and will cover any unwanted expenses.
"Travel insurance is just as important on a cruise as for any other type of holiday. Clearly it is reassuring to know that there are trained medics on board but that does not make travel insurance any less essential," said Joanne Field, marketing manager, American Express Insurance Services.
Ms Field added that being taken to the nearest hospital when on a cruise ship can prove very expensive if travellers do not have the appropriate holiday insurance cover.
"When people are taken ill at sea and need urgent treatment, transportation from the cruise ship to the nearest hospital can be an added complication sometimes involving the use of an air ambulance. Without insurance, the cost of this alone is likely to run well into four if not five figures," she explained.
