Scotland is one of the world's best walking holiday destinations, according to a new survey names.
The research by VisitScotland, Scottish Natural Heritage, Scottish Enterprise and Forestry Commission Scotland shows that Scotland is seen as an ideal holiday destination for many travellers.
As well as the walking, the region attracts holiday makers who are keen to experience Scottish culture and see a wide range of wildlife and scenery. In 2003, visitors spent around £1 billion whilst on holiday in Scotland providing much needed income to many culture sites.
Culture minister Patricia Ferguson said: "This research shows that visitors from all over the world enjoy getting out into the open, walking though our cities and trekking through our countryside.
"Walking is a great way of getting fit and what could be better than getting out into the fresh air to see what Scotland has to offer up close. Our vibrant cities are a stone's throw from stunning landscapes, magnificent coastlines and ancient castles steeped in history - Scotland has it all."
