Leading carrier British Airways is planning to cut prices on a number of its popular short-haul flights.
The airline is facing increasing competition from no-frill operators and has therefore decided to reduce fares to many major European cities including Berlin and Paris. Ticket prices could fall by as much as 50 per cent, with one-way fares staring at just £29.
It is expected that the reduced fares will form part of an overall revision of ticket prices and that British Airways will continue to offer similar service levels on the cheap flights including free food and drink. The company is also likely to reject any plans to introduce baggage handling charges a common practice for many budget airlines.
"We operate in a very competitive market and are determined to be the first choice for air travellers, who want low prices, flexibility and a superb flying experience," said Martin George, BA's commercial director.
The cheaper ticket prices could mean more people will be able to enjoy short breaks to popular holiday hotspots. However, travellers are warned to ensure they purchase adequate holiday insurance before leaving home otherwise they could find their trip very expensive if they are forced to pay out for expensive medical treatment.
