A growing number of British pensioners are opting for more active holidays rather than the normal two-week relaxed seaside trip.
A number of holiday companies are reporting a rise in the number of older people looking to book a trip that promises adventure and excitement such as scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, walking the Great Wall of China or going on safari in Africa.
Dave Foyle, head of general insurance at Bradford & Bingley, said that many older travellers are keen to take advantage of their increased leisure time.
"Interestingly, the two age groups to show the steepest increase in international travel since 1993 are 55-to-64 year olds with a huge 140 per cent increase and over 65s with a 110 per cent increase."
However, only one in ten retired travellers take out the appropriate holiday insurance cover and some travellers could risk expensive bills if emergency medical treatment is required whilst overseas.
