The growing number of couples planning to get hitched abroad should factor holiday insurance into their wedding budgets.
Research from insurer Direct Line estimates that Brits now spend around £1.7 billion on weddings overseas following a 15 per cent rise in the number of couples travelling abroad for the big day over the past decade.
The main reason for the increase appears to be escaping relatives, with 27 per cent of couples believing the overseas marriage is the easiest option. However, those newly-weds that forget to take out appropriate holiday insurance could find they end up paying out more than they originally planned.
Direct Line insurance spokesperson Simon Ziviani said: "Affordable airfares, a sense of adventure and the drudgery of British weather mean that overseas weddings are more popular than they have ever been."
However, he added that many people forget to double-check their insurance policies are up-to-date before they jet off. Lack of holiday insurance cover may mean that the happy couple could be forced to cover expensive medical treatments, unforeseen delays or missing baggage if things don't go according to plan.
