Travellers are being advised to make sure they take out insurance to avoid a nightmare holiday experience.
It is estimated that nearly 250,000 Brits will rely on their E111 this summer in order to cover the cost of foreign medical treatment. However, those who chose to travel abroad without cover could still face a large bill for expenses.
The specialist insurer Options Travel Insurance also stresses that many people may unwittingly take part in activities that are not covered by standard holiday cover and travellers are being urged to check the small print otherwise their claims may not be accepted.
"Horse-riding, scuba-diving and white-water rafting are becoming extremely popular activities, either as part of a specialist activity holiday or as a days adrenaline-filled excursion," said Dirk Kelly, from Options Travel Insurance.
"But increasingly people are getting caught out when they come to claim for injuries and cancellations because they did not check the extent of their insurance cover," he warned.
The cost of some injuries and subsequent return to the UK can amount to around £30,000, which could make the holiday from hell a very expensive trip.
