Many holidaymakers are unaware that purchasing travel insurance plays a crucial role in ensuring a safe and enjoyable holiday.
A new report produced by the Nationwide Building Society aims to raise awareness about some of the financial issues surrounding an overseas holiday.
It is estimated that 13 per cent of travellers over the past year have not taken out any form of travel insurance meaning they are putting themselves at great financial risk.
Holidaymakers are encouraged to make sure they shop around for the best holiday insurance cover that offers protection against unexpected medical treatment costs as well as covering possible cancellations or lost belongings.
Stuart Bernau, Nationwides executive director, explained: "Everyone looks forward to their holidays but, amidst all the excitement, nobody wants to find themselves taking unnecessary risks or incurring unnecessary charges.
"At Nationwide we want our customers to enjoy themselves to the full without adding unreasonably to the cost of their holiday," he added.
