Books could be responsible for more people opting for non-traditional destinations this summer but consumers are being reminded they still need to pack holiday insurance cover.
The Da Vinci Code is expected to be responsible for an increase in tourist numbers to a number of locations featured in the thriller, according to American Express Insurance Services.
American Express polled 10,000 of its holiday insurance customers about their future travel inspirations, and discovered that one in six people have been influenced by locations featured in books such as the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Captain Corellis Mandolin.
Personal recommendations also seem to convince people where to take a vacation, with 58 per cent picking their destination based on advice from family and friends.
Joanne Field from American Express Insurance Services said: "Thanks to the internet, low cost air fares and books such as the Da Vinci Code, we are all being inspired to travel more often both at home and abroad."
Anyone planning a trip inspired by the latest blockbuster is reminded to make sure they purchase holiday insurance cover to help protect against unexpected medical treatment, lost belongings or possible cancellation.
