A new survey reveals that many Brits are putting themselves in danger when renting a car in Europe.
The AA Motoring Trust discovered that car rental within Europe can mean excessive hidden charges, complex contracts and hazardous cars.
The research discovered that holidaymakers could be placing themselves in danger when renting in some key resorts. Four out of six cars hired in Playa de las Americas, Tenerife, were discovered to be in poor or very poor condition and five out of six cars were not roadworthy in Alanya, Turkey.
Those without sufficient holiday insurance could find themselves having to pay out to cover emergency medical treatment if they find the rental car brakes failing.
"Hiring a car anywhere in Europe should be a relatively easy and transparent process. Very often it is not, and becomes an exercise in risk that can cost you dear when you get home," explained Paul Watters, EuroTest project manager for The AA Motoring Trust.
He added: "The messages from this extensive survey of holiday car hire is that consumers need to be on their guard: they need to understand all of the rules and requirements they are signing for, and they should reject any car that is not relatively new and clean."
