Walkers keen to take advantage of new Ministry of Defence's plans to open up the UK countryside are still advised to ensure they have appropriate holiday insurance cover.
The MoD has launched a new website that allows the general public to see which areas of military land are now accessible. Walkers can use the site to plan routes across more than 600,000 acres of land which is owned by the MoD, including countryside in Lulworth in Dorset and the Salisbury Plains.
Kate Ashbrook, chair of the access committee of the Ramblers' Association, welcomed the decision but raised concerns that even more land could be opened up to encourage the development of the UK walking holiday sector.
Speaking to the Guardian, Ms Ashbrook explained "In Castlemartin in Pembrokeshire, you have to be escorted in a group."
"We would like to negotiate so that individuals could go there without having to be part of a pre-advertised group. The whole of north Dartmoor is occupied for live firing and we would like them to reduce that."
However, walkers hoping to venture into the military-owned land are advised to make sure they follow strict guidelines otherwise they could find themselves the main target on an army firing range. Another sensible precaution for ramblers includes making sure they have adequate holiday insurance before embarking on a walking vacation.
