Holiday insurance companies are realising that older people are requiring more comprehensive cover as they increasingly spend their retirement travelling overseas.
The affordability of foreign trips and the popularity of over-65 package holidays mean that insurance companies are expanding into providing specific policies for elderly holidaymakers.
Providers such as the Nationwide Building Society have reintroduced over-65 holiday insurance products because of the increased demand from consumers. The travel insurance often offers holidaymakers the security of health cover, protection against loss or theft as well as the cancellation of planned trips.
"In recent years it has become increasingly difficult for the 65s and over to arrange affordable annual travel insurance," said Nationwide's executive director, Stuart Bernau.
He added: "It is really important that people have adequate holiday insurance. No-one expects to fall ill, have an accident or have personal possessions go astray or be stolen but, unfortunately, holidays don't always go as expected."
