Anyone planning to take a gap year is being reminded that travel insurance is vital.
In recent years there has been a significant increase in the number of people who want to take time-out to travel. Although traditionally gap years were taking before university, many people are now taking career breaks in their 20s and 30s in order to visit other countries.
However, many backpackers are failing to make sure they have adequate travel insurance and are putting themselves at risk.
A recent report by the Social Issues Research Centre (SIRC) discovered that many young adults are keen to maximise their personal happiness ahead of their career progress.
Kate Fox, from the SIRC, said: "When in doubt, which is often, they go travelling, whether to escape the pressures of perfection-seeking or to search for enlightenment or fulfilment or something."
Yet forgetting the travel insurance cover could mean being forced to pay for expensive emergency medical treatment or covering the cost of stolen belongings and mean having to return to the UK to work more hours to pay off the bills.
