Even popular holiday destinations with advanced package tours cannot provide total cover for consumers travelling without holiday insurance.
Today's serious incident on a ferry in Indonesia did not result in loss of life, but with 113 people pulled out of heavy seas in an emergency rescue operation, many holiday-makers saw their personal possessions disappear.
Increasing numbers of British tourists go to sample the vast beaches and tropical climate of south-east Asia, where travel companies have provided enticing packages for all times of the year.
But local transport is often poor, with safety standards not enforced, and radio-contact frequently breaking down on sea traffic crossing between the islands.
Today's incident is the third of its nature in three years in Indonesia, where ferries often travel with four times more people than they have capacity to hold.
Indonesia's government has now pledged future action to avert future catastrophes.
But the incident proves that holiday insurance can never be considered too much of a luxury when planning time abroad.
