European travel remains popular with many people planning a vacation in 2006, according to a new report.
A survey by TripAdvisor.com shows that 62 per cent of travellers are planning to visit Europe over the next 12 months with 70 per cent of those favouring a destination in the Western region of the continent.
Rome and Venice were very popular with travellers, with 54 per cent believing that Italy offered the best food in Europe.
"We are seeing a trend shift with travellers now favouring classic popular destinations such as Rome, Venice, Paris and London, while Eastern Europe was all the rage in 2005," said TripAdvisor's Michele Perry.
"With all of the incredible variety Europe has to offer, it was surprising that the top two cities according to travellers are both in Italy."
However, even those not planning long-haul trips are advised to make sure they have adequate holiday insurance to help cover the potential cost of having to replace lost belongings or cover expensive medical treatment.
