Travellers organising their own holidays are being advised to check the small print on their insurance cover.
The Trading Standards Authority is warning that consumers who buy package holidays are often entitled to refunds or flights if they run into difficulty whilst on vacation, however, when holidays are booked on a DIY basis there is little cover.
The Daily Telegraph reports that the latest figures shows that around 23 million of the 64 million people travelling out of the UK last year were on a DIY holiday - but many are still unaware that they risk being stranded abroad because of inadequate insurance cover.
The Trading Standards Institute believes that the growth of holiday booking via the internet is responsible for the rise in DIY purchases and that the law needs to be changed to reflect this.
"Existing legislation protecting consumers is ineffective and outdated as it does not take into account this new trend," said Bruce Treloar, the author of the report.
"Many people assume they will be covered in the event of insolvency, either by the holiday provider, airline, their credit company or through their travel insurance. Often, however, this is just not the case."
