Holiday makers should be entitled to compensation from airlines for delays to their flights.
The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has confirmed that all airlines must now legally provide care and compensation for delayed travellers. The new legislation has been welcomed by many holiday consumer groups.
Anne Harvey from Holiday Which? said: "This is great news for the millions of us who fly every year and shows that the airline industry has run out of excuses for not providing passengers with assistance if things go wrong.
She added: "The European Court of Justice
have paved the way for passengers who face travel delays in the future to expect help and support from the airline they paid to travel with."
Both the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the European Low Fares Airline Association (ELFAA) had argued that forcing airlines to pay compensation to holiday makers would force up operating costs for many carriers.
