Many A-level students may be planning to celebrate their recent success with an adventure-packed gap year but could find themselves stranded without valid insurance cover.
With UCAS (Universities & Colleges Admissions Service) predicting that around 140,000 students are planning to take a year out before going to university, there is concern that some travellers could fail to consider whether their holiday insurance will provide sufficient cover on their forthcoming backpacking venture.
Gap year advice website Gapyear.com estimates that nearly 25 per cent of student travellers do not have the appropriate insurance cover and could risk running up huge bills before they even begin their higher education, reports the Daily Telegraph.
"Many think that if they aren't going to bungee jump or get involved in adventure sports, then they are unlikely to have accidents," said Paul Dittmer from Columbus Direct.
"In reality, most accidents are the more common ones that we see back home, like slipping and breaking something, walking into things and traffic accidents."
Gap year students are being advised to purchase a policy that will cover them for the whole of their trip as well as all of the locations they plan to visit.
