Anyone planning a trip to Africa is being advised to double check their holiday insurance cover as bird flu continues to spread.
The H5N1 bird flu has recently surfaced in Nigeria - the first time the virus has been seen in Africa and authorities are warning travellers to make sure they have sufficient holiday insurance to cover any possible associated medical treatments.
The World Organisation for Animal Health has advised Nigerian authorities to introduce a number of measures to prevent the spread of the disease including culling, quarantine, disinfection and increased controls on the movement of animals.
"If the situation in Nigeria gets out of control, it will have a devastating impact on the poultry population in the region, said Samuel Jutzi, head of the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation's (FAO) animal health division.
"It will seriously damage the livelihoods of millions of people and it will increase the exposure of humans to the virus," he warned.
It is thought that the strain of flu has caused the death of at least 88 people in seven countries since its first appearance in 2003.
