Shopping around for the cheapest holiday insurance cover could help to offset the introduction of baggage handling fees on economy flights.
No-frills airline Ryanair has introduced a charge for carrying baggage on flights. Passengers will be charged £2.50 per bag on luggage booked in advance, whilst bags checked in on the day will be subjected to a £5 charge.
Ryanair's deputy chief executive, Michael Cawley, believes the baggage charge will help ensure each customer is paying a fair cost for their travel as well as reducing waiting times at check in.
Speaking on BBC Radio Five Lives Breakfast, Mr Cawley dismissed claims that the fee was a stealth charge on travellers. He added: "We are now going to put costs where they reside for people who are carrying bags. The people who are not are not going to subsidise them any longer."
However, travellers could offset the introduction of the handling fees by shopping around for a better deal on their holiday insurance cover and as protect themselves against any unforeseen medical costs or even lost baggage.
