Brits are being urged to share travel costs in order to ease up road congestion.
Over 38 million empty car seats per week are helping to cause traffic jams and delays, according to research from Halifax Car Insurance. However, car sharing could help to not only improve traffic flow, but also cut travel costs.
At present just one in five drivers who drive to work actually car share with colleagues or friends, meaning that per year they spend around £1017 on travel costs. However, simply sharing the journey could reduce these costs by around 50 per cent and improve general road safety.
Mike Pickard, head of risk & underwriting at Halifax Car Insurance, said: "More and more people are driving to work every day and with an increasing number of vehicles on the roads causing jams, as well as increasing petrol and parking costs, it can be a stressful journey."
He added: "Passengers in the car not only improve your environmental credentials, they can also act as an extra pair of eyes for you, especially in the morning rush hour when traffic is at its heaviest."
