Offering parents reduced price holidays could help to prevent truancy within schools.
A scheme designed to encourage parents not to take children on holiday during term time is to be extended following a successful five month trial period, reports BBC News.
Durham County Council joined forces with travel agents Hay Travel to offer a ten per cent discount on holidays taken during official school holidays in order to reduce the number of schooldays missed by students.
"Parents do it because very often holidays are cheaper during term time and they believe that missing a few days' lessons won't make much difference to their children's education," said Council cabinet member for children's service, councillor Neil Foster.
"They couldn't be more wrong. Good, consistent attendance at school is crucial to give children the best chance of success," he added.
The scheme has been extended until August 2006 and it is likely that similar incentives could be adopted by schools across the UK.
