A new survey has revealed that many young motorists are discouraged from driving because of the high costs of running a vehicle.
Motor insurance provider Direct Line revealed that around 43 per cent of non-driving 18 to 25-year-olds are without a licence and around 25 per cent of those who have passed their test do not own a car.
It is estimated that the buying and running of a car for the first year now costs around £5,700 and can mean many young drivers are forced to rely on public transport or family and friends.
"It's expensive for anyone getting on the road for the first time and we see many youngsters driving their parents' car for the first few years," said Emma Holyer, Direct Line's motor spokesperson.
However, shopping around for more affordable motor insurance cover could help many young drivers save enough to purchase their own car.
