Many young drivers are not paying adequate attention at roundabouts and could be putting other road users at risk as well as increasing their motor insurance premiums.
A new survey, reported by CarPages, suggests that many motorists are not comfortable with roundabouts and often fail to follow basic road safety when approaching them.
In particular, many drivers fail to look at the car ahead and concentrate on approaching traffic from the right. However, this means vehicles are at risk of collision, if the front driver decides not to move.
Instead, young drivers are being encouraged to start to check to the right, straight ahead, to the left, and all mirrors when approaching a roundabout. This means that they are more likely to realise that the car in front has decided not to enter the roundabout system.
Avoiding a rear end shunt means that there is less risk of whiplash injuries and also means that drivers can avoid having to claim on their motor insurance, which often leads to higher premiums.
