Police are warning young drivers that they could lose their car if they fail to purchase valid motor insurance.
Scottish police used the new Road Traffic Act to seize four cars last week after they were driven by people without insurance or a licence.
The officers from Lothian and Borders Police stopped the cars and the owners now have 14 days to claim their confiscated vehicles as long as they can prove they have a valid driving licence and car insurance policy.
The cars will be subject to a removal fee of £105 as well as a daily storage charge of £12. If the cars are not claimed within two weeks then the police are entitled to destroy or sell the vehicles.
It is hoped the new legislation will ensure that more young drivers do not take the risk of driving without insurance, especially as online premiums remain competitive.
Chief inspector Kenny Buchanan of Lothian and Borders road policing branch said: "The message is clear to drivers, it is going to cost you much more to break the law than it would to equip yourself with the necessary insurance and proper documentation to keep your car on the road."
