There has been a sharp rise in the number of drivers being caught using mobile phones whilst driving.
The Times reports that there has been a 75 per cent increase in the number of fixed penalty notices issued to drivers caught using phones whilst behind the wheel. The latest figures show that the number of fines issued has increased from 80,000 in 2004 to over 140,000 last year a total revenue of £7 million.
The increasing use of automatic number place recognition and viewing speed-camera footage means that more drivers can be traced via the DVLA and fined.
A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police, where the number of fines has increased by 210 per cent, said: "We have had several well-publicised campaigns which involved sending out increasing numbers of police on to the roads at peak times.
"Its a key part of the law for us along with other driving offences."
It is expected that the current £30 fine will actually increase to £60 next year as well as a possible three-point driving licence endorsement. This could mean many young drivers could find their car insurance premiums rising significantly if they are caught driving and chatting at the same time.
