Young drivers could be forced to pay out around £150 per year in unnecessary motoring repairs because of dishonest garages.
The National Consumer Council (NCC) claim that British drivers spend around £4 billion per annum on dodgy and unwanted repairs because they do not take their car to a reputable garage.
The NCC is urging the government to do more to ensure that motorists are not subjected to unnecessary costs by implementing a new code of practice to catch rogue traders.
NCC chairman Lord Whitty stressed that young drivers should be given more information on how to find a good garage which offers honest service.
"The garage industry has long been bad news for consumers. The good news is that the industry is now starting to show some signs of turning the corner," Lord Whitty said.
"However, there is still a long way to go before Britains 25 million car drivers can be sure of a fair deal."
