Young drivers are being urged to shop around for insurance to ensure they are getting the best deals.
A study from swiftcover.com discovered that some insurance companies base premiums on stereotypes rather that actual driving capability meaning many younger drivers are being forced to pay out more for cover.
Factors such as where you live and what car you drive can also influence the cost of insurance cover, but young drivers can help to lower costs by agreeing to a higher excess or improving their driving skills via the advanced driving test.
Andrew Blowers, chief executive at swiftcover.com said: "Whatever car you drive and wherever you live, you need to insure your car against theft and damage.
"Whilst you might be more likely to drive a Ford in Essex, it doesnt mean you will be paying the same for your car insurance as your fellow Essex boy or indeed girl. That's why it is important to shop around."
