Roads in Somerset are to undergo an extensive £5.1 million upgrade as part of a move to improve road safety.
Over 450 stretches of road will be resurfaced in a project that is expected to last until the middle of August.
Initial work will begin in the South Somerset and Mendip districts and will continue in West Somerset, before commencing in Sedgemoor and Taunton Deane.
The new surface dressing improves road safety by reducing the number of potholes and the likelihood of skidding. It also helps to seal the road to prevent water seeping into it and causing major structural damage - it is estimated that it can prolong the life of a road by around ten years.
Highways services manager Andy Ackerman from Somerset Highways said: "Surface Dressing extends the road life and provides a new surface, improving skid resistance and safety.
"It is quicker than other maintenance techniques but we're very aware that motorists dislike the speed limits and loose chippings."
