Drivers are being warned to make sure they don't tempt fate by driving without car insurance on the forthcoming Friday 13th.
Research suggests that many motorists drive more careful on the traditionally unlucky day, in an attempt to avoid being involved in an accident.
Recent figures, released by insurer Hyperformance, show that the number of reported accidents in 2003 on Friday 13th was the same as the average motoring day, with 120 claims.
However, Friday does appear to be an unlucky day throughout the rest of the year, with four out of the top ten worst days being the end of the working week. The research showed that Thursdays are generally considered the safest day of the week for drivers.
"The point is that whether based on hard fact, perception or even superstition, anything that makes motorists stop and think about what they are doing and alters their approach to driving can help to improve road safety," said Steve McPherson, sales & marketing director at Hyperformance.
