Older drivers make fewer car insurance claims despite the recent police suggestion that elderly motorists should rely on public transport instead.
Saga Motor Insurance has dismissed claims from Torquay police force that older drivers should consider retiring from the road because they may present a threat to other road users. Instead Saga insists that older drivers have less accidents and make less claims on their insurance polices than their younger counterparts.
"We believe it is unfair of officials in Torquay to suggest that older drivers give up their car keys and resort to public transport. Older drivers are statistically proven to be better drivers, in fact drivers under 50 are 31 per cent more likely to make a motor insurance claim," said Paul Green, communications manager from Saga.
"More than 7,000 people aged 50 and over passed their driving test last year and many of these were in their 60s and 70s, proving that age is no barrier to good driving," he added.
