New research by the AA suggests that the internet is the first port of call for more than 75 per cent of the UK consumers looking for home and car insurance.
The company claims that more than three quarters of insurance customers use the internet to research insurance premiums, with a significant proportion going on to purchase their insurance online.
The AA estimates that 40 per cent of all new car insurance and about a fifth of home protection is taken out online.
These figures point towards an increase in online insurance sales last year of 64 per cent for motor and 50 per cent for home cover.
"Even those who don't have access to a computer often ask computer-literate friends or family to do the searching for them, but complete the deal offline," says David Tyers, head of marketing with AA Insurance.
He adds: "But the number of customers buying online is growing fast."
Mr Tyers also points out that lower premiums are often an incentive for buying online.
