A new GPS-based vehicle device could help to lower the cost of car insurance for many young drivers.
RAC Trackstar is launching its Category 5 stolen vehicle tracking system the RAC Trackstar 5. The device not only enables a stolen car to be tracked but could also deter the theft of vehicles using the owner's keys.
The RAC Trackstar has a specialist "Driver Authentication" device which automatically detects if any unauthorised person attempts to start the vehicle. There has been a sharp rise in the number of car thieves who are stealing keys in order to then steal a vehicle a recent British Crime Survey discovered that 50 per cent of cars under six years old are being stolen by thieves with the original keys.
If a car is moved without the correct driver authentication then a silent alert is automatically sent to Trackstar's control centre to help track the vehicle's whereabouts.
Pat Gallagher, director of in-vehicle products, said: "As motor manufacturers have made their vehicles ever more secure, car thieves have increasingly resorted to stealing the keys in order to take the car.
"RAC Trackstar 5 addresses this issue by incorporating a separate driver authentication Device, so that the system is aware that the car is being driven by an unauthorised driver - even if they have the vehicle keys."
The device is fully accredited by the UK's insurance industry body Thatcham and could mean that many young drivers could see a reduction in their premiums if they opt to install the tracking system.
