The growing popularity of car clubs could mean that some people neglect to check their car insurance allows them to drive the jointly-owned vehicles.
The clubs usually involve the renting of cars on an hourly basis and are seen as an environmentally-friendly and convenient way of reducing unnecessary congestion on UK roads, especially in areas where parking can be difficult.
The idea, which is backed by the government, is likely to prove very popular on housing developments and some builders are already including introductory membership of car clubs as part of buying packages.
Streetcar launched a car club in April 2004 in London which has proved successful for those living in the city and the company has already expanded to include clubs in Brighton and Southampton.
"There are clear environmental benefits," said Andrew Valentine, who founded the company.
"About 20 per cent of people who join us give up a car. People drive less because they don't have a car outside their door and tend to use other types of transport," he added.
However, anyone interested in joining a car club is advised to double-check that they will have the appropriate car insurance cover in case they are involved in an accident.
