The increase in driveway thefts has highlighted the need for people to make sure their have appropriate insurance cover.
Research by Lloyds TSB Insurance discovered that in 2004, over 250,000 cars were stolen throughout the UK - with many of the offences occurring outside people's own homes.
The study also showed car thefts accounted for one in twenty car insurance claims and two in every five car crimes take place on the street outside the owner's home.
"Drivers tend to be on their guard when they're out on the town, but they still seem to believe that their streets and driveways are a safe-haven from theft," said Phil Loney, managing director at Lloyds TSB Insurance.
Motorists are also being urged to make sure they securely lock their cars at night and keep valuables out of view.
Mr Loney added: "No one can stop the most determined thieves and it's in these cases that your car insurance will prove invaluable."
