The festive season could see an increase in the number of cars vandalised over the coming days especially as more alcohol is consumed in city centres.
Motorists are being advised by local councils to leave their car at home if they are planning to come in to the city centre otherwise they could be forced to claim for damage on their car insurance policies. It could also mean drivers are less tempted to drink and drive.
In the final run-up to Christmas many people will be attending office parties or having celebration drinks with friends, but leaving a vehicle in a vulnerable area may ultimately lead to a rise in the cost of New Year's car insurance premiums.
"It's important that drivers remember after drinking the night before that, although they may not feel drunk in the morning, they will probably still be over the legal limit to drive," said Tom Bryant, road safety officer with the City of York Council.
He added: "If you need to travel to work or elsewhere the day after the Christmas party, take a train, bus or, better still, walk the fresh air will do your hangover the world of good!"
