Over one million people are driving around without insurance because they have failed to check that their motor insurance policy covers work usage.
Research conducted by online insurance company motorinsurance.com estimates that many people using their vehicle for work purposes could be unaware they are breaking the law.
The Telegraph reports that the survey discovered that around 82 per cent of owner managers drive at least 50 business miles each week, with 26 per cent of them driving over 500 miles a week for work purposes but that they are not clear if their current policy covers such journeys.
"If people are using their cars for a business trip, they must be insured under a Class 1 use - a business use policy," said Mark Bower-Dyke, managing director of motorinsurance.co.uk.
"If they only have a domestic and social use, the insurance companies do not have to pay up if they have an accident."
