Many young drivers are being pressured into carrying too many passengers because of the high costs of running a car.
A study by car insurance provider Direct Line discovered that the cost of owning a vehicle can lead to "dangerous overcrowding", with youngsters putting their fellow travellers at risk by carrying passengers without seat belts.
Direct Line estimated that around 20,000 young people share ownership of a car with friends, with 20 per cent claiming that they feel pressurised by friends into carrying more than is legally allowed. A total of 40 per cent admitted they had experienced a near-miss accident because of distraction from friends.
Emma Hoyler, Direct Line's motor spokesperson, said: "With fewer first time drivers owning their own car there can be increased pressure on those with one to drive all their friends around."
"We're calling on all drivers and especially young drivers to avoid overcrowding cars and ensure all passengers are wearing seatbelts at all times," she added.
Shopping around for the most competitive motor insurance premium could enable many drivers to save towards owning their own vehicle and therefore help to reduce the need to carry excessive passengers.
