Car insurance providers could be forced to offer cover for more hybrid vehicles as a number of models hit European markets.
Recent reports in the Nihon Keizai Shimbun suggest Japanese manufacturers, including Honda and Mitsubishi, are considering launching a number of fuel efficient hybrids in European states.
Concerns over climate change and the recent rise in fuel costs means that many European-based consumers are looking for an alternative and cheaper form of vehicle.
Initial reports suggest that Honda is already planning to launch a new hybrid version of its Civic sedan in 2006, whilst Mitsubishi will begin exporting its hybrid minicar model just two months after its official Japanese launch.
Hybrid cars often combine a conventional petrol engine alongside an electric motor which is powered by an onboard battery pack, this means that the vehicles use less petrol and have reduced pollution levels.
