A new company is planning to launch in the UK next week with the goal of creating the worlds first water-powered car.
OM Energy, a Russian venture with support from UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), has applied for a patent for the technology and predicts that commercial trials of the new hydrogen-based fuel technology could be underway within a year.
The water-powered car plans are based on separating hydrogen from water and the British government will take a proportion of any future sales from OM Energy, The Independent reports.
Hydrogen is currently used to power larger vehicles, such as buses, but transportation and handling of the fuel can be dangerous and costly. Using water would significantly cut costs and reduce the risks associated with greener fuels.
OM Energy's "Electro Hydrogen Generator" is being designed to extract hydrogen from water by spinning it very fast. It would then be mixed with a very small amount of petrol.
However, it is unclear how insurers will react to a completely new vehicle design or what policies would be available to anyone purchasing a water-powered car in the future.
