Garages and sheds
The reason why thieves bother to break in to garden sheds or garages is because gardening tools and equipment can be worth a considerable amount of money. As can bicycles, golf clubs and home decorating tools all of which are often stored in the shed or the garage.
Here are some tips to looking after your tools and sporting equipment:
- Make sure that your home insurance covers the property in your outbuildings as well as in your home.
- Make sure that not only your home has a solid door but that your garage and shed have sturdy doors as well.
- Lock them with a strong padlock
- If your outbuilding contains a door through to the house, ensure that this inner door is just as secure as your main front door.
- With an 'up and over' garage door, it is probably best not to rely solely on the centre lock provided. Instead, consider putting padlocks through the inside runners, or fitting padlocks with a hasp and staple on either side of the door. There are also specially designed mortice locks that close into the side frame, and other devices that stop the door being lifted.
- If you have a house alarm, you could have it upgraded to include your shed or garage.
- Replace any cracked shed windows and use a lock on windows that open. Try to fit a strong grille or heavy wire mesh wherever possible.
