Fences or gates
Walk around your property to check that there are no obvious weak spots where a burglar or thief could break in or easily hide themselves from view.
Prime areas for this to occur are sagging fences, overgrown areas or around loose or rotting boards.
Here are some top tips:
- Keep fences under a meter high around areas that can be seen from the street or by neighbouring properties otherwise you are simply creating an unnecessary hiding place for burglars
- Elsewhere keep fences as high as possible to make them difficult to climb over
- Solid wooden gates and fences offer easy entry for thieves, and even ones as high as two metres can be scaled. However, if they are topped with 50cms of open-ended or other weak trellising, it will be more difficult for a prospective burglar to climb without being seen or creating a noise.
- Wrought iron gates can make an attractive and surprisingly efficient deterrent. Their ornamental framework doesn't offer suitable footholds or handholds and can also be seen though so intruders can't lurk around them.
- If possible, use at least two locks on a gate.
