Natural barriers
One of the best ways of preventing intruders is to use natural means. A thick, prickly hedge may be all the protection you need to deter a burglar, while a mature climbing rose can be more attractive and effective than barbed wire.
Here are so hot favourites for hedges:
- Purple Berberis Berberis thunbergii 'Atropurpurea'
It is medium-sized, deciduous and has purple foliage and a thorny stem, preferring a sunny position in the garden
- Blackthorn 'Prunus spinosa' - Also called 'Sloe'
It is a spiny shrub which usually grows less than 12 feet tall, with dense growth, white flowers and blue-black fruit used to flavour sloe gin.
- Common Holly 'Ilex aquifolium'
This is an evergreen hedge with dark green spiked leaves, and large red berries are found on female plants. It is most suitable for well-drained soil.
- Japanese Bitter Orange 'Poncirus Trifoliata'
This hedge grows best in warmer areas and is the spikiest hedge plant of all.
