Securing your home & garden
Moving house
No matter whether we rent or own our house the chances of being burgled rapidly increase during this period. The stress of moving house can often cause people to overlook precautions that they would ordinarily always take, for example checking that your home contents insurance covers all of your possessions whilst you are actually moving?
When moving be aware of the following things:
- Check that you possessions are covered by your contents insurance during the actual move
- Select estate agents and removal companies under friends or colleagues recommendation and make sure that they belong to a professional organisation.
- If your estate agent recommends posting a 'For Sale' sign outside your house ask them to be careful about handing out your personal details to other people.
- If you hand over your keys to agents or removers make sure that you have chosen people you feel that you can trust and ask them to return them as soon as possible.
- Only allow someone to look at your home if they have made an appointment with the estate agent. If strangers appear without an appointment and ask to look at your home, suggest that they contact the estate agent first.
- On the actual moving day try to arrange for young children and pets to be supervised by someone else.
- During the move keep all house doors, garage doors and van doors locked and especially keep your wits about you when people have left for a coffee break.
- Avoid any breakages by taking special care when loading and unloading valuable items such as TV's and furniture.
- After you have moved in avoid advertising your valuable new purchases by leaving labelled boxes outside your house as thieves may assume that as you have newly moved in you haven't had time to install an effective alarm.
- It is a good idea to update the locks throughout your new home straightaway, as the previous occupants (and other people) may have keys to the existing ones.
- You will also need to check that you are properly insured for your new address, and remember to update your motor insurance and registration.
